RECYCLING IS NOT AN EMERGENCY….RECYCLING IS NOT AN EMERGENCY….RECYCLING IS NOT AN EMERGENCY!!
This is a personal message comes from Ellen Keefe, Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling Executive Director, Posted March 19, 2020
I specifically include the date of this post, as the Coronavirus pandemic situation is changing so rapidly that what I say today may be irrelevant tomorrow. This past Monday, March 16, we posted a message stating that Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling staff would be monitoring our communications: phone, email, and Facebook, in order to provide you with the best services and information available to meet your recycling needs. Since that time, we have been thinking long and hard about how our services meet the needs of the people we serve.
While our new recycling center for TVs, glass, and other materials was not yet open to the public, we were freely referring callers to other companies. This morning, the light bulb went off. What right to I have to want to protect my own employees, yet expect the employees of our fellow recycling companies to be exposed to the same danger? For that, I apologize to my colleagues.
Another ah-ha moment came when I asked myself why we must feel guilty about not accepting TVs. A TV or a pile of cardboard or glass is not going to poison you sitting a while longer in your basement or on your back porch. Being exposed to other people, exposing my very dear employees to you, very well may. How can anyone care more about the environment than the health of our fellow man?
We are all asked to make sacrifices at this time. Many, many employees and businesses are facing far worse consequences due to their businesses being shut down than Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling is. However, if WE don’t shut down as well, I, my staff and our families may suffer them. I will not subject our families to those dangers just for the convenience of someone not wanting a TV sitting in their basement.
God willing, we will all make it through this community health emergency safely. Recycling IS NOT part of it. Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling will be here when life starts getting back to normal, but only IF we take care of ourselves now. We wish you all good health and peace of mind.
